Prioritizing Your Health While You Travel

I am currently writing this blog in the living room of a friend’s family member in Charlotte. We had a long layover in Charlotte and felt this was the PERFECT time to visit! Each week, I like to touch on all types of wellness related topics and today it seems to be a perfect fit to discuss how to prioritize your health when you are traveling. I’m not talking about once you get there, I’m talking about on your way there. Whether you are embarking on a long road trip or flight, have an uncomfortable travel situation or long layover, you can make sure you set yourself up for success.

So here’s a list of my top 5 ways to prioritize your health throughout your travel day!

1. Pack a Reusable Water Bottle

It should be one of your biggest priorities to stay hydrated on your travel day, especially if you are going to be sitting around a lot. Packing a reusable water bottle will also allow you to save money (and minimize waste) by just filling it up every time you see a water station. A good goal would be to get in 100 ounces of water in the day which will allow you to flush a lot of the toxins from your body, keep your cells hydrated, keep your organs functioning well, and regulate your body temperature.

20 ounce water bottle and I fill it 5 times!

2. Wear Compression Socks

I don’t wear them often but I started wearing them when I travel more recently after a recommendation from a friend. This is particularly important if you are sitting for long periods of time. Compression socks can help maintain good blood flow to your extremities and reduce swelling. I have noticed a lot more swelling in my ankles as I’ve gotten older so this is a big one for me. They ain’t sexy but they definitely help!

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

One of the biggest culprits to getting sick while traveling is not getting enough sleep. Sleep provides essential support and elements to fight infection. If you are operating on a sub-optimal amount of sleep, your body isn’t producing as many infection-fighting antibodies. Sometimes this can happen due to an early flight, anticipation of a trip, or late nights. Try to prepare yourself ahead of time to make sure you get the hours you need. Go to sleep earlier, try a dose of melatonin to fall asleep, or catch up on your zzz’s by taking naps or sleeping while you travel.

4. Avoid a ton of added sugar

This is a really tough one because when you are traveling, it’s sometimes easier just to grab a sugary, salty, processed snack instead of opting for more whole foods. However, many studies have shown that spikes in blood sugar can have a negative and detrimental impact on your immune system.

5. Take Frequent Movement Breaks

Any chance you get to move your body will benefit you. I could do another long blog post on how movement impacts your immune system, circulation, brain activity, internal organs, and digestive system but I can summarize pretty easily. Movement is good for your body and your mind and when you are having a long travel day, it will be essential that you get your body moving. Take a walk through the airport, walk 5 minutes each time you stop for gas, walk down the aisle of the plane or train, do a gentle yoga flow every chance you get. Find some way to move your body as much as you can.

The bottom line is travel is extremely stressful on the body and mind. Even if you think it’s a vacation, our bodies take a toll from the journey. Don’t forget to set yourself up for success by prioritizing your health during your travel. Your body, and soul, will thank you for it.
