Ugh. It’s definitely a taboo topic. I can’t tell you how many times I have been working out and get a whiff of something stinky just to realize it’s…ME! More often than not, the clothes smell fine coming straight out of the laundry but a little bit of sweat and the smell is nasty! I have tried the fancy green stuff, oxy clean, vinegar, and more. Nothing seems to help. I have definitely thrown away a couple sports bras that I couldn’t seem to get the smell out of. Most recently I have found a great concoction that seems to work. First off, I wouldn’t encourage purchasing any specific type of detergent because it’s a personal preference. I personally love the smell of Tide Sport and that’s what I have used most recently. I put all of my sports bras in the bathroom sink and fill it with VERY hot water. I add in about 2 tablespoons of detergent, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and a splash of vinegar and I let it soak for most of the day. Then I wash them in the washing machine like normal. In the past I have tried the vinegar and baking soda solution in the washing machine but I think soaking them is the ticket. There’s a few other tips for lengthening the life of your sports bras:
Soak your sports bras immediately after use - Seriously though, who has time for this? Not me. I won’t ever do this and I know it. However, washing them as soon as possible after wear is highly recommended.
Wash your sports bras without detergent and just baking soda and vinegar a couple times. Sometimes the smell can be caused from a buildup of laundry detergent residue and washing a couple times without it can clear out some of the buildup.
Air dry your sports bras - This will allow the odors to escape instead of circulating over and over again in your dryer. This will also elongate the life of the elastic in your sports bras. If you can’t (or don’t want to, like me), smell your clothes before putting them in the dryer. If needed, wash them again.
Turn your clothes inside out before washing them. Most of the bacteria and odors accumulate on the inside of your garments so this is where you want the agitation to occur in the washing machine.
Know when it’s time to put them to rest. If you’ve tried all of the above and they still stink, you have a choice: either deal with the stink or throw them out.
