One of my ABSOLUTE favorite wellness activities is Hot Yoga! There are so many things about it that I love, I could write another blog post about it…and I might! But this post is for you if you’ve ever wanted to try it but were scared, intimidated, or nervous. I have compiled a list of 5 things to help you prepare for your first yoga class and here they are:
#1. Sign Up AND Arrive Early
First off, most hot yoga classes (especially at peak times) are going to be very full so you want to definitely sign up. If you have a preference on where you are in the room, you will want to get there early enough to secure your spot. The room will be packed so make sure you get yourself near a wall or in the corner to have less bodies surrounding you.
#2. Bring a Friend
Sometimes this isn’t always possible but if you can, invite a friend to go along with you (someone reliable) to make it easier and less intimidating. I’ve been to classes by myself and I have been to them with friends and it’s always nice to have a familiar face next to you on the mat.
#3. Take Frequent Breaks
The room is 105 degrees and can get super hot and steamy. If you’re not used to working out in these types of conditions, have reasonable expectations for yourself. Very often, I have to take a minute or two to catch my breath and reset. I can’t count how many times I have gotten light-headed and overheated in a hot yoga class, trying to do more than my body felt capable. You will often look around and see at least one person taking a minute in child’s pose or savasana until they feel like they can rejoin the class. There is NOTHING wrong with taking a break.
#4. Bring a Towel and Plenty of Water
You will sweat, and you will sweat a lot! I personally love sweating and don’t typically “towel off” during a workout. However, in hot yoga, profusely sweating can cause your mat to become slippery and sometimes make it very difficult to see. Most studios provide towels for wiping off but you can also bring your own. Take frequent water breaks which will help give you a breather and help cool you down.
#5. Have Fun!!!
You might walk into the room noticing how serious everyone seems to be. Remember that yoga is not just a physical practice, it is a deeply spiritual practice and also a way of life. While you may notice some yogis doing advanced moves, handstands, and twists, hopefully we are all there to become better people, not just improve our poses. Don’t forget to enjoy the process, have fun, and follow my favorite verbal cue from Yogi Aaron, “turn the corners of your mouth upward.” :)
